Standard 1

Standard #1: Learner Development

The teacher understands how learners grow and develop, recognizing that patterns of learning and development vary individually within and across the cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physical areas, and designs and implements developmentally appropriate and challenging learning experiences

The artifact I choose to include from my EDU 206 was a timeline I created on the oral development of children 0-5 years old. The timeline demonstrates a deeper understanding of literacy development and understanding.

Reflection

I chose this project to represent standard one, because of the correlation between this standard’s purpose and the assignments. Both require an understanding of how learners learn, and the different stages of development. It is important to hold benchmarks, so students can keep track of their progress and see how far they have come. Also, recognizing patterns in the timeline is important to apply them in real life. Children continuously babble before they speak, and point before they comprehend. This is how we know that they are learning words, and not just understanding them. This could also be applied to struggling young readers and ELL students. It is also important to note that every child is different, so the rate of oral development may vary, hence there are many variables that affect the speed and fluency of language.
